• Opportunity Knocks

Over the summer of 2012, Cuprojects had the opportunity of offering Music & Lyric workshops at a local military base.

These workshops were a part of the summer programme that is run for children/families of those serving in our armed forces.

Three workshops were run by Richard Willetts, teaching Banjo/Ukulele Guitar( & Bass Guitar) & Keyboard, and between 12 and 16 young people attended

The Session began with a percussion “Jamming “ session led by Shoshana - where we think everyone found and discovered their inner Beat/Rhythm !

Richard along with Joel (who is part of our junior volunteer Programme) spent the time teaching simple chords on all the instruments, there was laughter & real concentration and by the end of the session all that attended were able to play a song using some simple chords on the instrument of their choice.

Running alongside the music we run a lyric workshop which really tapped into the imagination of the young people, looking at current songs and meaning, looking at styles of songs and emotion/message behind each lyric, and once that was done the young people made up their own lyrics to the tune of a well-known song – here the creativity was unleashed and some interesting lyrics were born like “Batman and the crazy crazy flowers”

All in all the music & lyrics workshops were a great success & we thoroughly enjoyed offering this creative service! to the young people, we are hoping to follow this up with a more regular workshop so watch this space.

I will leave the final quoted comments to the young people

"That was awesome"..."Amazed I can play a ukulele"..."Richard taught it really easy"..."I love the keyboard"..."I loved writing my own song"..."We should start a band"
